How to Build a Simple Skincare Routine for Tweens

Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated—especially for tweens. With social media full of multi-step routines and trending products, it can be easy to think that more products mean better skin. In reality, a simple routine is often the best place to start.

The goal at this age isn’t perfect skin. It’s learning healthy habits, understanding your skin, and taking care of it gently.

1. Start with gentle cleansing

A gentle cleanser helps remove dirt, oil, sweat, and other buildup without unnecessarily irritating the skin. Washing the face in the morning and before bed can be a simple routine to remember, with additional cleansing after heavy sweating.

And remember: clean doesn’t need to mean scrubbed. Harsh scrubbing and excessive exfoliation can irritate skin.

2. Keep skin moisturized

Even skin that feels oily can benefit from moisturizer. A simple moisturizer helps maintain hydration and support the skin barrier.

Look for a product suited to your skin type. For sensitive or dry skin, fragrance-free options can be especially helpful.

3. Make sunscreen an everyday habit

Sun protection is one of the most valuable skincare habits to learn early. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when protecting exposed skin from the sun.

Think of sunscreen as part of getting ready for the day—not just something for beach days.

Keep it simple

A tween skincare routine can really be: Cleanse → Moisturize → Protect

There’s no need to rush into complicated routines simply because a product is trending. Introducing lots of products at once can also make it harder to identify what is irritating the skin.

Skincare should be about care, not perfection.

If persistent acne, rashes, pain, significant irritation, or other skin concerns appear, a dermatologist can provide individualized guidance.
